  • A passionate debate is taking place in France among education professionals, social scientists, and members of the clergy about the proposition in favour of introducing teaching on religion into the public schools. The debate includes such questions as what should be the content of such a course? Into which discipline should it be included (history, philosophy, civilisation)? But the most difficult controversy arises from the claim made by the clergy that they should do the teaching. The secular side does not want to hear of any religious teaching within the walls of the French republican school. It considers that it should in no case be conceived of as catechism but rather as a new field of interest, worthy of being included in school programmes and of being taught in a secular way.
