[p. VI]) del abril de 1930, constituyó ún acontecimiento literario destacado. Fueron dedicados al escritor y perodista José Antonio Fernández de Castro, que había dirigido el Suplemento Literario de dicho periódico y que figuraba como uno de los más entusiastas animadores de la literatura cubana por aquellos días. Eran miniaturas de la vida popular habanera, concebidas en la forma ritmica del son, compositeón musical bailable surgida del folklore cubano, con todos los elementos afroespañoles de la pobladón insular. Esos primeros Motivos de son eran ocho, con personajes y costumbres del solar, y su vocabulario y prosodia characterísticos: ‘Negro bembón,’ ‘Mi chiquita,’ ‘Búcate plata …,’ ‘Sigué … ‘Ayé me dijeron negro … / ‘Tú no sabe inglé,” Si tú supiera …,’ y 'Mulata…
