Different Dynasties, optical designs, manufacturing techniques, decorative features, and styles are presented. It is noted that bubble formation associated with cooling metal castings, adversely affected mirror surfaces. From the Song Dynasty (960–1279 AD) onward, white metal was used for plating/smoothing mirror surfaces.
