- R. J. V. LEE began his career in 1980 as an engineering apprentice at Ratcliff Tailifts Ltd., Welwyn Garden City, England. In 1988 he graduated from Loughborough University with a B.Sc. in Production Engineering and Management, and then joined the Total Technology Ph.D. programme at UMIST, which enables an industrial career to proceed whilst still researching for a doctorate. Thus he is associated with Edbro pic of Bolton, England, as the manager of a large capital project aimed at providing an overall materials handling solution to match the company's needs. The solution can include the possible use of an automated guided vehicle system, and he has now formulated a methodology for the economic use of guided vehicles in traditional batch manufacture. He became a Chartered Engineer in February 1991
- R. LEONARD. After a career in heavy engineering, Dr Leonard joined UMIST to specialize in Production Management and in particular the design, operation and corporate efficiency of manufacturing systems. In 1977 he was promoted to the post of Director, to head a newly conceived Total Technology programme, where now over 70 Ph.D.s are taking place in collaboration with industry. He has published extensively in the areas of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, and the current paper relates to the possible integration of islands of automation by automated guided vehicles (AGVs).
