  • KAI MERTINS, Dr.-Ing., has been head of the Production Control and Manufacturing systems Department at the Fraunhofer-Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology (IPK), Berlin, Germany, since 1983. From 1988 he has been director for Planning Technology. He has more than 12 years' experience in design, planning, simulation and control of flexible manufacturing systems, manufacturing control systems, shop floor control systems and computer integrated manufacturing. He was general project manager for several international industrial projects, and has lectured at the Technical University of Berlin. His special fields of interest include manufacturing strategy development, planning for production systems, and shopfloor control and simulation.
  • ROLF ALBRECHT, Dipl.-Ing., is an academically trained engineer, who was born in 1950. After studying production engineering at the Technical University of Berlin, he joined the Institute of Machine Tools and Production Engineering (IWF) at the Technical University Berlin.
  • In 1988, he won a scholarship at the IBM Scientific Center in Heidelberg, researching the integration of knowledge-based systems for production engineering applications. Subsequently he moved to the Fraunhofer Institute of Production Systems and Design Technology (IPK) in Berlin, where he took charge of the Department of Production Organisation.
  • He has over nine years' experience in planning and managing computer controlled manufacturing plants, of installing production planning and control systems, and especially of development, implementation and installation of shopfloor control systems. He also has many years of active experience in consultation, research and development in the fields of system integration and the implications of knowledge based software solutions for shopfloor and manufacturing control and process planning.
  • VIKTOR STEINBERGER, Dipl. Soz., was born in 1955. He studied sociology with industrial relations and methodology of the social sciences as primary subjects at the Freie Univerität Berlin. There he worked on a research project on participative planning processes with professor Theo Pirker in 1981. After University he has been a consultant for cooperative producing companies and local employment initiatives, collecting experience in cooperative management as a co-owner of the consulting company. Since 1988 he has worked at the Department Systems Planning at the IPK Berlin in projects on shopfloor control and on the implementation of planning and control systems for manufacturing companies.
  • FRANK-WALTER LUTZE, Dipl.-Ing., was born in 1956 and studied computer science at the Technical University Berlin. Afterwards he worked for four years in the areas of systems analysis and the development of control systems. Then he joined a US computer manufacturing company where he first took charge of implementing MRP-Systems at customer sites. Since 1987 he has managed for this company a development project in the field of advanced production control systems. He is currently Managing Director of the company Impuls GmbH, Ulm.
