  • The Health Committee is the successor committee to the influential Social Services Committee which ran , from 1979–1990 and was chaired by Labour's Renee Short until her retirement in 1987 and then by Frank Field, Birkenhead's Labour member. The Social Services Committee was charged with examining what was known until July 1988 as the Department of Health and Social Security. In November 1990 the Social Services Committee was dissolved and replaced in January this year by the Health Committee and a separate Committee on Social Security which examines the workings of the Department of Social Security
  • An example of valuable published evidence is the annual Public Expenditure questionnaire sent by the Health Committee , to the Department of Health. This is published around June/July each year and contains information on trends in actual and planned expenditure for the mat recent and previous years, staffing costs and other key points of information on NHS expenditure issues. This information and oral evidence sessions with departmental officials and Ministers forms the basis for the committee's annual inquiry into public expenditure on the health service. Written papers on any topic concerning expenditure or indeed on the NHS in general are welcomed at any time
