- The magnetization density is the sum of a pure spin contribution and an orbital contribution due to the interaction between the neutron magnetic moment and the magnetic field created by the unpaired electrons moving in their orbits. For metal-containing systems, the magnetization density is not identical to the spin density because of the orbital contribution, except in the case of systems with zero angular momentum like the Mn2+ ion with half-filled 3d shell. However, for most of the transition metalsions, the orbital moment is almost entirely quenched and the orbital contribution can be neglected or treated as a correction.
