  • The applied voltage corresponds to ∼ 0.1 V/μm field. It has been shown by the authors of ref. 7 that the assumption of the applied field being small and the practice of retaining only the first terms on the right hand side is acceptable at least up to this field. Of course, the helix unwinding field decreases as the transition to the Sm-A is approached. Hence it is possible that the assumption is not strictly valid in the immediate vicinity of the Sm-A-Sm-C* transition. However, there is no such problem in any other region
