  • The analysis of British data was facilitated by financial support from the Meat and Livestock Commission and unstinted access to the records of the National Food Survey. Any (mistaken) opinions and conclusions should however be ascribed to the authors. The cross‐sectional analysis which provides the basis for a priori trend will be presented in detail in a subsequent article so far as it relates to Great Britain and is not published already.
