- Lanthanum hydroxide cluster showed no measurable catalysis in DNA hydrolysis (ref. 8b). Although some activity was proposed in another paper (ref. 8a), the activity (5.3% conversion for 30 days) was much smaller than that reported here. This is at least partially ascribed to the fact that the reaction was carried out in highly alkaline solution (pH 8.6): the catalysis by rare earth metal ion is quite effective only around neutral pH: see FIG. 4). In addition, lanthanum ion is considerably inferior to cerium for the DNA hydrolysis
