Essay Voice Coach & Fight Coach: A Collaboration in Physical Effort, Free Breath and the Open Voice

Matthew E. Ellis Matthew E. Ellis is an Assistant Professor of Movement and Acting at the University of Oklahoma. He holds an MFA in Theatre Pedagogy with an emphasis in Movement and Fight Directing from Virginia Commonwealth University. Matthew has worked as both a professional actor for the past ten years and a professional fight director for the past six years. His fight direction credits include Hamlet, Noises Offl, Man of La Mancha, Breath, Booml, As You Like It, Macbeth, Come Back Little Sheba, Quay West, Beauty and the Beast and Taming of the Shrew among others.

Rena Cook Rena Cook is an Associate Professor of Theatre at University of Oklahoma where she teaches Voice, Speech and Dialects. She has served as vocal coach for the Illinois Shakespeare Festival on The Merry Wives of Windsor, Richard III, and Wild Oats. She has directed Dancing at Lughnasa, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and Medea. Rena holds an MA in Voice Studies from the Central School of Speech and Drama. Her theatrical reviews have appeared in The Journal of Dramatic Theory and Criticism and Theatre Journal. She is on the Board of Directors for VASTA and assumes the role of Editor-in-Chief for the next issue of VSR.
