I would supplement her telling critique by adding that feminists in France had been criticizing male domination for centuries before Michel Foucault began to underscore the more general existence of power relations in history and the use of reason to justify them. Most earlier feminists in France did not question epistemologies of sexual difference; what they opposed was male dominance. They did not believe that difference necessarily led to dominance, and they argued for their right, as female citizens (citoyennes). I have argued elsewhere, and at length, that historically, feminism in France has been fer more "relational" than "individualist," an argument that diametrically opposes that made by Ozouf. See
