REPORTS

THE COFFEE HOUR AT PENN STATE

Pages 75-79 | Published online: 15 Mar 2010

  • ∗Department of Geography, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA 16802.
  • 1The Coffee Hour was installed at Penn State on the urging of Ronald Abler and John Adams who had newly arrived from Minnesota to join the faculty at Penn State. According to Abler, it was Jan O. M. Broek, long-time Chair of the Department, who established the Minnesota Coffee Hour, modeling it after the practice at Berkeley, where he had previously been associated with Sauer.
  • 2Chairs are set up in rows only moments before the speaker is introduced. Pre-lecture conversation is best encouraged when a few chairs are scattered around the room, but most of the room is left open for cookie-munching, serendipitous wandering, and random conversation.
