  • The energy release rate has also been shown to depend strongly on the crack velocity as shownin the Maugis paper referenced above (Ref. [21]). Such crack velocity effect experiments wereperformed over wide time scales and under significantly different experimental conditions, eitherat fixed grips (i.e. imposed displacement) or fixed load. The JKR experiment does not satisfyeither of these conditions. Crack velocity effects are examined by imposing a relatively smallstrain on the interface, and then monitoring the decrease in contact area. Most significantly, theinterface is not carried to rupture. We seek here to determine the effects of contact time on theadhesion, while minimizing possible crack velocity effects by using a constant rate of approachand retraction for all measurements reported here

  • There have been several other methods suggested in the literature to determine K fromP vs a (contact area radius) data. As detailed in Ahn and Shull (Ref. [13]), K can bedetermined independently from W by simultaneously acquiring the height of the lens. Whenthe experimental data in Figs 1 and 2 were fitted according to the procedure, K was determinedto be 2:2 ¢ 104 Pa with r2 D 0:996. When this value of K, along with the measured radius ofthe lens R was used to calculate the work of adhesionWa, no statisticallysigni. cant . t could beobtained. In summary, for the data presented in this report, the three-parametermodel was foundto give excellent statistical agreement and provided an expedient reference curve for numericalintegration

  • During the static contact period, a small increase in contact area was observed due to creepeffects. However, this increase did not contribute significantly to the overall adhesion hysteresis
  • Although not shown here, when the humidity was controlled at an intermediate value (15%),values of cumulative adhesion hysteresis between 0 and 37% were observed. Likewise, at higherhumidity (80%) the magnitude of UJKR was larger and increased at a faster rate in time than at37%
