Court Culture and ‘Absolutism’ in Restoration England

Andrew R. WalklingAndrew Walkling holds a PhD in History from Cornell. Universityand is presently Dean’s Lecturer in Art History, English Literature, and Theatre at the State University of New York at Binghamton. He has published a number of articles on Restoration court masque and opera, including ‘Masque and politics at the Restoration court: John Crowne’s Ca1isto’ (Early Music 24 (1996), 27–62), and he is currently preparing a book on masque and opera in the Restoration and an edited volume on John Blow’s Venus and Adonis (c. 1682), and will be co-editing with Robert Thompson a new edition of James Shirley and Matthew Locke’s Cupid and Death for the Musica Britannica series. His 1997 dissertation ‘Court, Culture, and Politics in Restoration England: Charles II, James II, and the Performance of Baroque Monarchy’ was awarded the 1998 Messenger-Chalmers Prize and the 1998 Guilford Essay Prize from Cornell University.
