• Since the beginning of the Second World War, Ministry of Defence procurement of active devices has been the responsibility of the Inter-Services Committee for the co-ordination of Valve Developments (CVD), based at the Admiralty. CVD, acting through specialist sub-committees, has continued during this time to sponsor development work. In addition to these sub-committees, research advisory panels have functioned whose job it has been to administer research contracts. In 1972, the title was changed to Directorate: Components, Valves and Devices.
