  • C. H. Lawrence, Medieval Monasticism, ( Longman, 2nd ed 1989) is a good introduction to monasti-cism generally. Louis J. Lekai, The Cistercians, Ideals and Reality, (Kent State University Press, 1977) is a valuable study. A fruit of long research in France is Bernard Peugniez, Routier des Abbayes Cisterciennes de France, Editions du Signe, 1994. David Knowles, The Monastic Order in England, 2nd ed. (1963) is still an excellent book. The Cistercian World, ed. (Pauline Matarasso, Penguin 1993), 24 is an excellent selection of Cistercian twelfth century writing. Last, but not least, Georges Duby, L'Art Cistercienne. (Flammarion, 1993), offers a masterly flowing picture of their thought world, beautifully illustrated.
