NOTES AND REFERENCES

  • The first issue of this book was in 1963. L. T. C. Rolt, Thomas Newcomen, The pre-history of the Steam Engine, (Newton Abbot David and Charles 1963). Copies were presented to all members of the Newcomen Society to mark the tercentenary of the year of Newcomen's birth. Following the premature death of L. T. C. Rolt in 1974, then a Vice-President of the Society, a much enlarged version of the book including the results of later research was prepared for the Society as the Rolt Memorial Volume, The Steam Engine of Thomas Newcomen, L. T. C. Rolt and J. S. Allen, (Moorland Publishing, 1977). In 1997 this book was reset with a new introduction to reflect further research and issued by Landmark Publishing, containing a bibliography and a list of all Newcomen Society Papers on the gen-eral topic.
