Sticky platelet syndrome: an important cause of life-threatening thrombotic complications

•• Study of patients with transient ischemic attack or cerebral infarction showing in vitro spontaneous platelet aggregation pointed out to the platelet defect as the possible cause of these thrombotic events. It also proved the efficacy of acetylsalicylic acid alone

•• Report of 22 cases of transient ischemic attack without any well-known risk factor for this ischemic complication. The only abnormality was the excessive platelet adhesiveness and/or platelet aggregation. The consequence of the discontinuation of the successful antiplatelet treatment led to the repeated occurrence of transient ischemic attack and an increase in platelet aggregability and adhesiveness

•• The summary of 10 years’experiences with sticky platelet syndrome from its initial key study report of a 24-year-old woman who overcame acute myocardial infarction in the seventh month of pregnancy. Although positive family history and laboratory finding of her increased platelet aggregability in response to adenosine diphosphate and epinephrine were present, she had no prothrombotic risk factors and no organic lesion of coronary arteries
