Polyunsaturated fatty acids alter the rules of engagement

Pages 27-30 | Published online: 18 Jan 2017

  • First publication reporting that polyunsaturated fatty acids (arachidonic acid and docosahexenoic acid) decrease expression of human leukocyte antigen class I on the surface of antigen-presenting cells, with an associated decrease in lysis of those cells by cytotoxic T lymphocytes. The fatty acids act by decreasing surface appearance of new class I molecules by slowing their flow from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi.
