  • In the traditional settlement pattern of Eastern Nigeria, agricultural land falls into two geographic categories: garden or “compound” land, and main farming areas. “Compound” land is that nearest to the dwellings and is farmed largely by women with their kitchen-garden crops. The main or outer farm land is worked largely by the men and produces the subsistence crops of yam, cassava, maize (corn), etc.
