  • B. Migliorini, Storia della lingua italiana, Florence 1960, 3.
  • The problem formed the subject of a seminar organized by the Istituto di Archeologia e Storia dell'arte greca e romana of the University of Rome during the academic year 1962/63, continued partly in 1963/64, on a group of Roman sculptures from Abruzzo. The papers written on that occasion form volume 10 of Studi Miscellanei published by the said seminar (Rome, 1967). The introduction to the seminar, also published in the volume, to a certain extent acts as the introduction to this article. The volume also contains a reply to Prof. E. Will who had expressed his impatience in a note added to the Proceedings of the 8th International Congress on Archaeology, Paris, 1963: “Le rayonnement des civilisations grecque et romaine sur les cultures périphériques,” Paris 1965, 522–23.
  • Bernard Schweitzer, “Die europäische Bedeutung der Römischen Kunst,” in Vermächtnis der antiken Kunst, Heidelberg 1950, 143–167 (reprinted in Zur Kunst der Antike, Ausgewählte Schriften, Tübingen 1963, II, 198–216). This essay, with others by the same author, will shortly be published in Italian by Il Saggiatore, Milan.

  • I have reproduced the two sculptures in “Le rayonnement des civilisations grecque et romaine sur les cultures périphériques” (Huitième Congrès Internat. d'Archéologie Classique, 1963), Paris 1965, pl. 108, 2, 3 (”Naissance et dissociation de la koiné hellénisticoromaine”).
