- The mean kinetic energy value of 3/2 kT per “particle” is interpreted as the energy derived from its translational degrees of freedom, However, thermal energy is not only associated with the translational, but also with the rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom. It does not for the moment seem possible to determine quantitatively the relative importance of the roles of each of the three types of degree of freedom with respect to these phenomena. The influence of translational degrees of freedom may be somewhat less than 100% and the importance of the last two types may not be entirely negligible, but the order of magnitude of the total effect is likely to correspond reasonably closely to the value obtained when translational degrees of freedom are held solely responsible
