  • Cooper DKC. Christiaan Barnard and his contributions to heart transplantation. J Heart Lung Transplant. 2001;20:599–610. (The best paper written about Christiaan Barnard's life and professional accomplishments, including many excellent personal considerations. It is highly recommendable when evaluating Barnard's role in the history of surgery.)
  • Barnard CN, Cooper DKC. Clinical transplantation of the heart: a review of 13 years’ personal experience. J Royal Soc Med. 1981;74:670–674. (Perhaps Barnard's best professional paper when describing his contributions to heart transplantation. His work on heart valves and heart preservation was not included in this paper. The latter had not been introduced yet.)
  • Reichart BA, Reichenspurner HKC, Odell JA, Heart transplantation at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. Twenty years’ experience. S Afr Med J. 1987;72:737–739.
  • Brink JG, Cooper DKC. Heart transplantation: the contributions of Christiaan Barnard and the University of Cape Town/Groote Schuur Hospital. World J Surg. 2005;29:953–961. (Another excellent work following the paper of DKC Cooper presented in reference # 2. Both are unique and complete publications, and are necessary readings for any serious student of Barnard's work and life.)
  • Rowe DJR. Dr. Christiaan Barnard: renowned surgeon, egoist but and old-fashioned family doctor at heart. CMA J. 1979;120:98–99.
  • Terblanche J. Chris Barnard – a personal tribute to a gifted heart surgeon and a great intellect. S Afr Med J. 2007;97:550. (As the title indicates, a very personal view of the man and the heart contributor by someone who knew him well! This is a short paper but worth reading.)
  • Barnard C, Pepper CB. One Life. Toronto, Ontario: Macmillan; 1970. (first American edition)
  • Barnard C. The Second Life. Cape Town, South Africa: Vlaeberg; 1993.
  • Barnard C. The Donor. London: Michael Joseph; 1996. (References 8–10 are three excellent books by Chris Barnard. Again, these books are obligatory readings for those who want to know more about the noted surgeon–writer. Of these books, I enjoyed more The Second Life, probably because his life had become more public and complicated. His writing style was more engaging as well.)
  • Cooper DKC. Chris Barnard – By Those Who Know Him. Cape Town, South Africa: Vlaeberg Publishers; 1992. (This book is superb, and of all the references, it is possible that this one reflects better the real world and accomplishments of Christiaan Barnard. If only one work is to be read, this is the one! DKC Cooper is to be congratulated for putting together such a fine work on the life and legacy of his appreciated mentor and friend.)
  • Barnard CN. The operation. A human cardiac transplant: an interim report of a successful operation performed at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. S Afr Med J. 1967;41:1271–1274.
