  • The quote comes from an article in the Prager Medicinische Wochenschrift (Vol 20, 1895, pp 475–479), which is not marked by name, so that it could be a notification of the editors. This item has been attributed by some contemporaries to Philipp Knoll. In the Festschrift zur Feier des fünfzigjährigen Regierungsjubiläums seiner Majestät des Kaisers Franz Josef I.Herausgegeben vom Akademischen Senat der Deutschen Karl-Ferdinands-Universität in Prag 1899 Hering’s successor in Prague, Johannes Gad, relates to Ph.Knolls article “Ewald Hering” in the Prager Medicinische Wochenschrift, 1895
  • Already in 1861, 75 of 90 representatives of the city council supported the Czech nation (Cohen GB: The politics of ethnic survival: Germans in Prague, 1861–1914. Princeton 1981, p.47); in such dominance may be sure this body regarded as representative of the Czech side, especially since it had decided to close the German schools in Prague, a measure which, however, was not accomplished (Prinz, F.: Die böhmischen Länder von 1848 bis1914, pp. 3–238 in Handbuch der Geschichte der böhmischen Länder, Vol III (edited by Karl Bosl), Stuttgart 1968, p.82)

  • Ernst Mach (1838–1916), the famous physicist and philosopher, was a professor of experimental physics at Prague from 1867 to 1895 (details in Hoffmann D: Ernst Mach in Prag. In Studien und Dokumente zu Leben und Werk [editors: Dieter Hoffmann & Hubert Laitko, Berlin, 1991)
  • Sitzungsprotokoll der Enquêtekommission 1881. One should add that even the Czech professors and lecturers of the philosophical faculty, the faculty of law and the medical school ultimately accepted the law on division of the university, resulting from their petition to the Herrenhaus (comparable to the house of lords) of 10 January 1882 which was also signed by two of the three authors of the above-cited résumés. • This letter is quoted here in extracts of Molisch (1939) with reference to the source (Eduard Suess estate). The receiver was representative of the imperial parliament and involved in this function in the discussions on the draft law of the division of the University of Prague. A letter with very similar content was received in November 1879 by Suess from Ernst Mach. Details of the drafts presented to both Houses of the Imperial Parliament, see Goll, J.: Rozdělení Pražské university Karlo-Ferdinandovy roku 1882 a počátek samostatné university české [The division on the Charles-Ferdinand University in 1882 and the beginning of the independent Czech University].
