Melanie Thernstrom Melanie Thernstrom is the author of three books including the New York Times bestselling title The Pain Chronicles: Cures, Myths, Mysteries, Prayers, Diaries, Brain Scans, Healing, and the Science of Suffering(Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2010). A Contributing Writer for The New York Times Magazine, she was one of the authors of the Institute of Medicine's report, “Relieving Pain in America: A Blueprint for Transforming Prevention, Care, Education, and Research.” She is also on the board of advisors of ACTTION, a public-private partnership designed to facilitate the development of new analgesics.
