Evaluating one-to-one teaching in general practice

Pages 61-66 | Published online: 03 Jul 2009

Abstract

The aim of the study was to develop a formative evaluation instrument to enable GP trainers to analyse their teaching in one-to-one tutorials. Data, in the form of statements of good and bad characteristics of teaching sessions, were collected from 59 trainers and 19 GP registrars in the former Northern region using a combination of the nominal group technique and focus group methodology. The statements were categorised and consolidated to produce an evaluation instrument using grounded theory techniques.A draft instrument was piloted and consequently modified. The instrument consists of 24 bipolar statements separated by a four-point scale with accompanying guidance notes. It is intended for use by trainer and GP registrar after a teaching session or for video analysis. The instrument offers a means of analysis of one-to-one teaching sessions with its primary purpose being for formative evaluation, enabling trainers to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their teaching.
