Self-concept development and measurement in children with mild intellectual disabilities

Abstract

Objective: Using a multi-trait–multi-method technique, self-concept was analysed as a function of chronological age in children with mild intellectual disabilities. Also, relations between reading achievement and self-concept were measured.

Methods: Participants were assessed on the Woodcock Reading Mastery Test–Revised, the Pictorial Scale of Perceived Competence and Social Acceptance and the Self-Description Questionnaire I–Individual Administration.

Results: A median split was run to divide participants into younger and older groups; older participants evidenced coefficients that revealed more multidimensionality, stability and discriminant validity. Also, a significant canonical correlation was found between the Harter Pictorial Scale at Time 1 and WRMT-R at Time 2, χ2(8) = 17.99, r = 0.62, p = 0.02.

Conclusion: As a whole, these results suggest that children with intellectual disabilities evince self-concept development similar to what would be expected in typically-developing children.

Objetivo: Utilizando una técnica múlti-rasgo múlti-método, se analizó el auto-concepto como una función de la edad cronológica en niños con discapacidad intelectual leve. Así mismo, se determinó la relación entre el rendimiento en la lectura y el auto-concepto.

Métodos: Los participantes fueron valorados mediante el Woodcock Reading Mastery Test-Revised, el Pictorial Scale of Percieved Competence and Social Acceptace y el–Self-Description Questionnaire I–Indovidual Administration.

Resultados: Se realizó una división de la mediana para dividir a los participantes en grupos de jóvenes y mayores; los participantes mayores demostraron coeficientes que revelan una mayor multidimensionalidad, estabilidad y validez discriminativa. También se encontró una relación canónica significativa entre la Harter Pictorial Scale en tiempo 1 y la WRMT-R en tiempo 2, χ2 (8) = 17.99, r = 0.62, p = 0.02.

Conclusión: En su conjunto, estos resultados sugieren que los niños con discapacidad intelectual evidencian un desarrollo del auto-concepto semejante al esperado en niños con un desarrollo típico.
