Efficacy research issues in AAC: interactive storybook reading

Abstract

This paper addresses several methodological issues in augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) efficacy research pertaining to interactive storybook reading in young children with severe speech impairments. Three recent studies attempting to systematically examine the effects of intervention on facilitating the linguistic participation of these children during storybook reading are discussed in order to illustrate the following issues: (1) subject selection criteria in terms of pertinent variables to consider; (2) experimental design with an emphasis on the use of single-subject designs; (3) selection of relevant intervention goals; (4) intervention strategies/approaches appropriate for the child and partner; (5) measurement of behavior change, including generalization and maintenance of intervention effects; and (6) evaluation of functional outcomes.
