Communication interventions for individuals with acquired brain injury

Abstract

Objective: This review synthesizes studies involving communication interventions for individuals with acquired brain injury (ABI).

Methods: Systematic searches of electronic databases, journals and reference lists identified 21 studies meeting inclusion criteria. These studies were evaluated in terms of: (a) participants, (b) communication mode, (c) targeted communication skills, (d) intervention procedures, (e) intervention results and (f) certainty of evidence.

Results: Across these studies, intervention was provided to a total of 184 participants aged 4–86 years. Communication skills targeted included: (a) social/conversational skills, (b) labelling objects, (c) receptive language, (d) sentence construction, (e) decreasing verbosity and (f) multiple skill areas. Intervention approaches were categorized as systematic/direct instruction, discussion and role play or not clearly described. Positive outcomes were reported in 57% of the studies, with three studies categorized as conclusive.

Conclusion: This literature base is considered inconclusive due to the lack of conclusive studies, the limited number of participants and the lack of replication for any single intervention approach.

Objetivo: Realizar una síntesis acerca de las investigaciones de intervenciones en comunicación para individuos con lesión cerebral adquirida.

Métodos: Una búsqueda sistemática de bases de datos electrónicas identificó 21 estudios que cumplieron los criterios de inclusión. Los estudios se evaluaron en términos de: (a) participantes, (b) modo de comunicación, (c) habilidades de comunicación como objetivo, (d) procedimientos, (e) resultados, y (f) certeza de la evidencia.

Resultados: Se brindo la intervención a un total de 184 participantes con edades entre los 4 y 86 años. Las capacidades de comunicación incluyeron: (a) habilidades sociales/de conversación, (b) etiquetado de objetos, (c) lenguaje receptivo, (d) elaboración de oraciones, (e) disminución de verborrea, y (f) áreas de múltiples habilidades. Los abordajes de intervención incluyeron instrucción sistamatizada/directa, discusión y juego de roles, o no claramente descritas. Se reportaron resultados positivos en 57% de los estudios y tres de los estudios se categorizaron como concluyentes.

Conclusión: Esta revisión de la literatura se considera no concluyente debido a la falta de estudios concluyentes, el limitado número de participantes, y la carencia de replicación de cualquiera de las intervenciones.
