Calciphylaxis and Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral and Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD): Ongoing Challenges and Opportunities
Welcome to our Collection on Calciphylaxis, a rare cutaneous vascular disease that intricately intertwines with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Defined by painful ischemic skin lesions, this collection delves into the pathohistological intricacies encompassing calcification, microthrombosis, and fibrointimal hyperplasia. With sepsis marking the most common cause of death and a 1-year mortality rate of up to 80%, we explore the shared pathogenesis hypothesis between normal renal function and CKD patients. Bridging critical gaps, we emphasize the need for comparative clinical and epidemiological studies, recognizing their pivotal role in advancing both clinical practice and basic sciences. Despite the importance of these studies, a scarcity exists in population/clinical data for calciphylaxis patients and animal models research, hindering further development. Additionally, with limited treatment guidelines, our collection advocates for standardization approaches. Beyond Calciphylaxis, we delve into CKD-Mineral and Bone Disorder (CKD-MBD), spanning non-dialysis, dialysis, and kidney transplant patients. While skin and bone biopsies remain gold standards, their invasiveness prompts our pursuit of non-invasive imaging techniques and biomarkers, promising improved diagnostic capabilities. Embark with us on a journey to deepen basic research for bench-to-bedside translation. Explore the potential of new biomarkers, non-invasive imaging, and diagnostic advancements, ultimately contributing to the safety and efficacy of novel treatment strategies. In recognition of patients facing long-term critical illnesses, we highlight the importance of holistic care from both medical teams and families, shedding light on their path to rehabilitation.
