Summary
During the past 20 years a vast literature has accumulated concerning the occurrence of salmonellas in poultry feeds. This review, an annotated bibliography of 224 references, brings recent findings and observations of almost 360 research workers together in a single text for a better understanding and appreciation of the present state of knowledge of the subject. A careful selection has been made from the available literature.
The review has been organized with the aim of covering all important references pertaining to the incidence, distribution, and sources of the salmonella organisms in poultry feeds; methods for their isolation and identification; and methods for their control and elimination. With the widespread distribution of salmonella organisms in poultry feeds it is currently difficult to control the disease. Active programmes aimed at eliminating the organisms need to be undertaken immediately.
