Using the Subjective Probability Model to Evaluate Academic Debate Arguments

Abstract

Four NDT final round negative disadvantages were evaluated by students using the subjective probability model. The results indicate that although NDT disadvantages were perceived to be a technically sound form of argumentation, they were not persuasive. The pedagogical implications of this finding indicate that the value of debate lies in the training it provides students in learning the proper form of argument but not necessarily in learning the techniques of successful argumentation that lead to persuasion.
