Finding Protection in Definitions: The Quest for Environmental Security

Pages 159-170 | Published online: 18 Dec 2017

Abstract

The definitional move of linking environmental concerns to security concerns has been promoted by those seeking greater salience for environmental issues and opposed by those suspicious of a move to ‘securitize’ environmental discourse. This essay reviews and critiques the arguments for and against this definitional change based on the degree to which they functionally view definitional argument as a strategy rather than as a truth claim.
