Multiple Pathways to Hypnotic Susceptibility: A New Scheme for Predicting the Depth of Hypnosis

Abstract

Previous research attempting to relate personality variables to hypnotic susceptibility has been inconclusive. It is suggested that this may be due to the single factor, linear prediction model typically used. This research examines the role of multiple factors in predicting trance depth, with particular importance placed on the relative salience of each factor within the overall personality structure. Two factors are isolated here: The quality of interpersonal relationships, and of cognitive activity. The results support the contention that there are multiple paths to hypnotic susceptibility, and that dominant personality patterns must be isolated.
