Auto-Hypnosis as a Defense against Coercive Persuasion

Abstract

Coercive persuasion is used to manipulate individuals or groups for political, military or cultist gains. Careful analysis of victims, who have successfully survived coercion experiences without developing major posttraumatic stress disorders, reveals a pattern of adaptive coping strategies. Utilizing spontaneous auto-hypnotic phenomena (such as dissociation, splitting, active/directed fantasy, and positive hallucinations), survivors have transcended both direct/interpersonal and indirect/impersonal coercion strategies over prolonged periods. Based on such clinical observations, a model for the primary prevention of severe psychophysiologic reactions to coercive persuasion is presented. The model program is based on awareness education, auto-hypnosis training, and simulation training. The program's ultimate goal is to educate, train and test potential victims in as realistic a manner as is ethically permissible via simulation-based electronic media-assisted instruction (such as interactive videodisc programs).
