Basal Sliding at the Margin of the Glacier Austre Okstindbre, Nordland, Norway

Pages 333-338 | Published online: 01 Jun 2018

Abstract

Observations in natural caves beneath the glacier Austre Okstindbre indicate that, within the marginal zone, basal sliding constitutes a major part of the surface movement. The relative importance of basal sliding decreases with distance from the margin. Sliding rates are in no simple way affected by the availability of water. Continuous measurement of basal sliding in a cave indicates stick and slip movement.
