Abstract
Diatoms in the surface sediments of Kane Basin are abundant in the northern and southeastern regions and rare or absent in the western basin. The low diatom numbers in sediment from the western basin is probably due to heavy ice cover in this region during the summer months and the presence on the sea floor of an exposed diamicton, possibly till, while high diatom numbers in the northern and southeastern parts of the basin may be attributed to sediment ponding in the deeper basins, high surface water productivity, and the possible absence of ice.
