Spiral Bending Test for Electrodeposited Coatings

, Ph.D., B.Sc.
Pages 101-106 | Published online: 09 May 2017

Synopsis

A simple method of measuring the ductility of rather brittle electro- deposited coatings is described. A plated strip is bent round a former in the shape of an equiangular (logarithmic) spiral and the radius of curvature at which the coating cracks is read off directly from graduations on the former. The percentage elongation at this point is simply calculated from the radius of curvature and the thickness of the plated strip.

Details are given of the construction of the former, the preparation of specimens and the method of carrying out the test. A brief summary is included of experience with the test to date.
