Transactions of the IMF Centenary Collection
As part of our 100th volume celebrations we are curating a collection of important papers from Transaction’s 100 volumes going back to the 1920s. We begin this process with four important papers on electroplating. Subsequent milestone papers covering all aspects of materials finishing will be included in due course. The initial tranche of articles includes three papers from Dr Joe Edwards. Dr Edward’s work on nickel electroplating and behaviour of addition agents in these baths is seminal and we would like to reprint one of the series of papers he wrote on this subject. Dr Edwards passed away last year after an outstanding career, and hopefully we can, in some small way, help to celebrate his work. Electroplating has always been a dominant theme for the journal, however, its exclusivity is not as apparent today as the Institute aims to reflect materials finishing with a range of techniques being discussed in the journal such as thermal spraying, organic (polymeric) treatments, chemical and physical vapour deposition and electroless deposition to name but a few. Although electroplating papers are still evident the nature of the electrolytes reported has also seen changes. Aqueous electrolytes have always been key, however, they are now joined by non-aqueous formulations such as ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents. The international appeal of Transactions is highlighted by regular papers from countries such as China, India, Iran and Turkey. The fact that the European Academy of Surface Technology (EAST) uses Transactions to report on its meetings and initiatives means we also have a good European input. Therefore, looking to the future we can hopefully see Transactions maintaining its position as a major repository for scientific and technical research in surface finishing and engineering.
