Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of teacher ratings as indicators of student personal academic characteristics. A high school sample of 375 juniors of both sexes completed the Colorado Educational Interest Indicator. Of these, groups of 24 students were selected for each of seven defined characteristics. In each group of 24, eight had rated themselves low, eight medium, and eight high on the given characteristic. Twenty-seven teachers rated the students on the same characteristics. Chi-square analyses revealed that teachers and students agreed on six of the seven characteristics: Accurate, Industrious, Logical, Organized, Scholarly, Theoretical. The results suggest that academically relevant personal characteristics are recognizable by teachers and that they can be used as an aid in counseling and teaching situations.
