Morphological and Isozyme Survey of Chalkbrood Disease of the Alfalfa Leafcutting Bee in the Western United States

ABSTRACT

Morphological characteristics of reproductive organs in selected Ascosphaerales were examined utilizing light and scanning electron microscopy. These methods did not establish criteria for distinguishing Ascosphaera aggregata from all other chalkbrood fungi. Esterase isozyme patterns of 50 of 52 geographic isolates of chalkbrood fungi collected from western North America were identical to those of A. aggregata.
