Abstract
The following is not a valedictory. Harold Wellman had that from the university 15 years ago when perforce he retired from undergraduate teaching. It had no effect because he wouldn't leave, and is still with us, encouraging the good research and scornfully critical, as always, of the bad. His most recent supervision of graduate research was that of Jiu Shan Yang from the Geophysics branch of the Institute of Geology in Beijing, who successfully completed his Ph.D. degree on the central part of the Alpine Fault in June 1989. That was a good 80th birthday present for the Professor.
