Many diabetics do not complain of diarrhea unless they are asked, but it can be a debilitating complication of the disease. Thus, physicians should question diabetic patients during routine history taking and order diagnostic laboratory tests that exclude other causes. The mechanism of diabetic diarrhea is unknown, but the authors discuss proposed explanations, and they summarize treatment options that have improved quality of life for these patients.
