Abstract
In this paper, the author demonstrates that there is a paucity of research about pre-service art specialist education. After reviewing the literature in this area and receiving responses to a questionnaire from college and university teachers, the author offers suggestions about research and practice for pre-service art teacher education programs. The author concludes that research about pre-service art teachers' knowledge about subject matter content, how they put that subject matter content into practice, and the impact of influences outside the university setting on pre-service programs need to be explored through a carefully constructed research agenda.
