Discovering the African folk-tale in translation

Abstract

The quality and resultant usefulness of folk-tales available in translation are investigated from the point of view of a newcomer to the field, and the problems of translating the folk-tale are explored by attempting to translate into English a folk-tale presented in French.

Die gehalte en gepaardgaande waarde van beskikbare, vertaalde Afrika-volksverhale word ondersoek vanuit die oogpunt van iemand wat vir die eerste keer kennis maak met die veld. Die probleme wat ondervind word met die vertaling van 'n volksverhaal word toegelig in 'n poging om 'n bestaande Franse vertaling van 'n Afrika-volksverhaal na Engels te vertaal.
