Nutritional anthropometric measurements of male Tamil clerks in Madras (sea coast plains) and Ooty (hills)

Summary

The mean values and standard deviations of height, weight, bicristal diameter, arm girth and skinfold measurements at triceps and biceps of 315 Tamilian adult men from Madras (South India) and 318 adult men of the same ethnic, linguistic, socioeconomic and age groups from the Hill Station of Ooty (South India) are compared. Intercorrelations between age and six anthropometric parameters have also been presented separately for Madras and Ooty subjects.

Body weight, arm girth and skinfold measurements were significantly higher in Madras subjects, and bicristal diameter measurements were significantly higher in Ooty subjects. Stature measurements were lower in Ooty subjects than Madras subjects but the difference was not statistically significant.

In both Madras and Ooty subjects, highest positive correlations were observed between arm girth and body weight. The next highest correlation observed was between triceps-biceps skinfolds.

Zusammenfassung

Mittelwerte und Standardabweichungen von Körperhöhe, Gewicht, Beckenbreite, Armumfang und Hautschichtdicken an Bizeps und Trizeps wurden zwischen 315 erwachsenen Tamilmännern aus Madras und 318 erwachsenen Männern der gleichen ethnischen, sprachlichen, sozialen und altermässigen Gruppierung von der Hügelstation Ooty (Südindien) verglichen. Korrelationen zwischen den 7 Parametern (einschliesslich des Alters) wurden getrennt für die beiden Herkunftsgruppen angegeben. Körperhöhe, Armumfang und Hautschichtdicken waren signifikant höher bei den Untersuchten aus Madras, die Beckenbreite bei denen von Ooty. Die Körperhöhe war in Ooty niedriger als in Madras, jedoch nicht statistisch signifikant. Bei beiden Gruppen wurde die höchste positive Korrelation zwischen Armumfang und Gewicht beobachtet, die zweithöchste zwischen den beiden Hautschichtdicken.

Les moyennes et écarts-types de la stature, du poids, du diamètre bicrétre, du périmètre du bras et des plis cutanés tricipital et bicipital sont comparés chez 315 Tamil adultes masculins de Madras (Inde méridionale) et 318 hommes adultes de méme groupe ethnique, linguistique et socio-économique et de méme tranche d'áge de la Hill Station d'Ooty (Inde méridionale). Les intercorrélations de l'áge et de six variables anthropométriques sont aussi présentées, séparément pour les sujets de Madras et d'Ooty.

Le poids, le périmètre du bras et les plis cutanés sont significativement plus élevés chez les sujets de Madras, et le diamètre bicrétre est significativement plus grand chez les sujets d'Ooty. La stature est plus basse à Ooty qu'à Madras mais la différence n'est pas significative.

Chez les sujets de Madras comme chez ceux d'Ooty, la corrélation positive la plus forte est celle du périmètre du bras avec le poids. Puis vient celle entre les plis cutanés tricipital et bicipital.
