Size and shape differences among six South American Indian tribes

Summary

Measurements of height, face height, nose height, nose breadth, head length and head breadth from individuals living in 17 villages of six South American Indian tribes were compared using Mahalanobis's morphological distances and their partition into size and shape components. Total D² values correlate well with estimates of linguistic differentiation, but not with geographic distances between tribes. Three of the six tribes were also studied for blood polymorphisms, and again measures of distances based on these haematological traits did not correlate well with the morphological ones. The shape component was about three times as important as size in contributing to the intertribal variation.

Zusammenfassung

Die Maße Körperhöhe, Gesichtshöhe, Nasenbreite, Nasenhöhe, Kopflänge und Kopfbreite der Bewohner von 17 Dörfern von 6 südamerikanischen Indianerstämmen wurden mit Hilfe des Mahalanobis-Abstandes und seiner Aufspaltung in Bestandteile der Größe und der Form verglichen. Die Werte der Gesamtabstände D² korrelieren gut mit der geschätzten linguistischen Differenzierung, aber nicht mit den geographischen Abständen zwischen den Stämmen. Drei der sechs Stämme wurden auch auf Blutpolymorphismen untersucht; die Abstandsmaße auf deren Grundlage korrelierten wiederum nicht gut mit den morphologischen. Der Formanteil war ungefähr dreimal so wichtig wie der Größenanteil beim Zustandekommen der Variation zwischen den Stämmen.

La taille, la hauteur faciale, la hauteur du nez, la largeur du nez, la longueur de la te˘te et la largeur de la te˘te d'invididus habitant 17 villages de six tribus indiennes nord-américaines ont été comparées à l'aide des distances morphologiques de Malahanobis et leur séparation en composantes de format et de forme. Les valeurs du D² total sont en bonne corrélation avec les estimations de différenciation linguistique, mais pas avec les distances géographiques entre tribus. Trois des six tribus ont été étudiées pour des polymorphismes sanguins, et à nouveau les mesures de distances basées sur ces traits hématologiques n'étaient pas en bonne corrélation avec les distances morphologiques. La composante de forme comptait pour environ trois fois plus que celle de format dans sa contribution à la variation intertribale.
