Weight-for-height in adolescence

Summary

Weight-for-height in adolescence was investigated on the basis of observations on 669 boys and 753 girls. It was found: (a) that given the age, the expected weight of individuals of the same height changes considerably with pubertal status; (b) that the change in weight for a given change in height also depends on pubertal status, and (c) that these relations vary with age so that chronological age should be taken into account when constructing weight-for-height standards. Interpretation of weight-for-height standards is briefly discussed.

Zusammenfassung

Das auf die Körperhöhe bezogene Gewicht in der Jugend wurde untersucht auf der Grundlage von Beobachtungen an 669 Knaben und 753 Mädchen. Es wurde gefunden, (a) daß das erwartete Gewicht des Individiums derselben Körperhöhe bei gegebenem Alter beträchtlich nach dem puberalen Status schwankt; (b) die Änderung des Gewichts bei einer gegebenen Änderung der Körperhöhe auch vom puberalen Status Abhängt und (c) diese Verknüpfungen mit dem Alter variieren, sodaß das chronologische Alter berücksichtigt werden sollte, wenn Gewicht-Körperhöhen-Standards erstellt werden. Die Interpretation des Gewicht-Körperhöhen-Standards wird kurz diskutiert.

Le poids-pour-la-taille à l'adolescence a été étudié sur la base d'observations sur 669 garçons et 753 filles. Il a été trouvé: (a) qu'à un âge donné, le poids attendu d'individus de même taille change considérablement avec le statut pubertaire; (b) que le changement de poids pour un changement de taille donné dépend aussi du statut pubertaire, et (c) que ces relations varient avec l'âge de sorte que l'âge chronologique doit être pris en compte dans la construction de normes de poids-pour-taille. L'interprétation des normes de poids-pour-taille est brièvement discutée.
