Age at menarche in Sri Lankan Tamil girls in Jaffna

Summary

Using the status-quo method and Probit analysis, the median age at menarche of Sri Lankan Tamil girls (N = 333) from a middle socio-economic group was estimated as 13·78 ± 0·07 years with a standard deviation of 1·01 years. This is about one year later than the median for the urban and about six months earlier than the median for the rural girls of Sri Lanka of the 1950s. However, this median age estimate agrees well with the results of an urban Madras sample. The reliability of the present finding is discussed.

Mithilfe der status-quo Methode und der Probitanalyse wurde das mittlere Menarchealter von Tamilmädchen (N = 333) einer mittleren sozioökonomischen Gruppe von Sri Lanka auf 13,78 ± 0,07 Jahre mit einer Standardabweichung von 1,01 Jahren geschätzt. Dies ist etwa ein Jahr später als der Median für städtische Mädchen und etwa 6 Monate früher als der Median für ländliche Mädchen in Sri Lanka der 1950er Jahre. Diese Medianaltersschätzung stimmt jedoch gut mit den Ergebnissen einer urbanen Stichprobe von Madras überein. Die Verläßlichkeit des vorliegenden Befundes wird diskutiert.

Par la méthode du statu-quo et l'analyse des probits, l'ăge médian à la ménarche de filles Tamoul de Ceylan (N = 333) de milieu socio-économique moyen a été estimé à 13,78 ± 0,07 ans avec un écart-type de 1,01 ans. Cést environ un an plus tardif que la médiane pour les citadins et environ 6 mois plus précoce que la médiane pour filles rurales de Ceylan des années 1950. Cependant, cette estimation d'ăge médian s'accorde bien aux résultats d'un échantillon urbain de Madras. La crédibilité des présents résultats est discutée.
